Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth. “Paul Revere’s Ride.”

December 18, 1860

Boston Evening Transcript. Originally “The Landlord’s Tale,” the poem appears on the front page of the newspaper. It subsequently appears in The Atlantic Monthly in January 1861, and in the book Tales of a Wayside Inn on November 25, 1863. From the first, Longfellow is taken to task for the poem’s historical inaccuracies, when Lexington town historian Charles Hudson writes, “We have heard of poetic license, but have always understood this to be confined to modes of expression and regions of the imagination, and should not extend to historic facts.”
